TAMPA – The Ron Paul campaign will hold a rally at the University of South Florida Sun Dome the afternoon of Sun., Aug. 26, the day before the opening of the Republican National Convention in Tampa.

USF anticipates “a major rally with thousands of supporters,” according to a news release.

It will begin at noon, with doors open at 11 a.m., and is free and open to the public, the release said.

The rally is in addition to a three-day festival planned by Paul supporters, but not sanctioned by Paul himself, to be held at the State Fairgrounds over the weekend prior to the convention.

Paul’s campaign has said he won’t be attending that event, and instead will appear at his own rally. That’s because Paul wants to play down long-standing conflicts between his supporters and the Republican Party establishment, and therefore hopes to control the tone of events in which he participates, his campaign chairman has said.

BLOG: Where goeth Ron Paul/Gary Johnson voters in Nevada?

Considering how close presidential elections have been in recent years, conservative votes for the Libertarian Party nominee, former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson who is likely to be the preferred back-up option for Ron Paul supporters could swing enough votes in enough swing states to swing the electionand control of the Supreme Court for a generationto Obama in November.

So what does the GOP do about all those conservative/libertarian voters who still arent sold on voting for Mitt Romney?

First, Republicans need to understand that browbeating and kvetching about wasting your vote on a third-party candidate will only cause those voters to dig in their heels. Instead, you might want to brush up on Carnegies How to Win Friends advice.

That said, Republicans must bear in mind that Libertarians have a political self-interest, as well. Theyve nominated the most credible and accomplished candidate in their partys history, which could earn them a record-breaking popular vote total this year.

But theres a way for everyone to eat their cake and have it, too. The way to do it is for Johnson and the LP to focus their campaigning in the solid blue (Obama) states where a popular vote for Johnson wont affect the electoral vote calculus.

But what about the Libertarians and Ron Paul supporters in swing states, like Nevada, who are hesitant to vote for Romney? What can they do to help boost Johnsons popular vote total without risking Nevada again going for Obama?

Vote swapping. Johnson and the LP should embark on an effort to get people who want to vote for Johnson in swing states to voluntarily and unofficially swap their vote with a Romney voter in a blue state.

Now, this vote swapping idea isnt anything new.

I remember it hitting radar screens in 2000 when Al Gores Democrats were trying to find a way to keep the Green Partys Ralph Nader from spoiling Ozone Als presidential bid. Imagine how much easier it would be for the LP to promote and coordinate a similar nationwide vote swap project using the Internet, Facebook and all the other social media tools we have at our disposal today.

Heres the bottom line: Gary Johnson is no more going to be elected president this year than Ron Paul. But if his objective is just to beat the LPs popular vote record and move his party forward, many conservative/libertarian voters would gladly swap their Johnson vote in swing states with Romney voters in blue states in November.

Ron Paul supporters working to get Ron Paul another blimp

It’s a bird! It’s a plane! Wait a minute — that, my friends, is a Ron Paul blimp.

That’s the reaction some of the presidential candidate’s biggest supporters are hoping for if they can raise enough funds to fly a dirigible over the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla. Back in 2008, Paul’s supporters raised $600,000 to fly the first Ron Paul blimp for six weeks over parts of Maryland and then down the coast to Florida. For Ron Paul Blimp 2.0, longtime Paul activist Trevor Lyman is gauging interest to make a scene simply at Tampa.

“Why did I want to do the blimp again?” he mused. “You know, I do think the symbolism of it is strong, I think that’s one of the main reasons — to show that we are undeterred.” Lyman also noted that he had received a number of emails saying bring back the blimp.

A day into the effort, only about 500 people had pledged to donate money, but Lyman wasn’t frustrated. “I think people may need some time to think about it and we’ll see how close we get,” he told Yeas & Nays. “[If] we don’t have enough we may come up with some other secondary project that’s somewhat similar, possibly a hot air balloon, possibly a whole bunch of those mini-blimps.”

Ron Paul: Add Inflationary Dangers to the Day’s News

By Kristina Peterson

Sure, the Supreme Court made some news, but that shouldnt overshadow the inflationary dangerslurking inthe banking system, Rep. Ron Paul (R., Texas) said Thursday. I find today a very interesting day in our history because theres lots in the news today, Mr. Paul remarked Thursday, opening an afternoon hearing of the House Financial Services Committees panel on domestic monetary policy, which he chairs.

Mr. Paul acknowledged that the House was scheduled to vote Thursday afterno0n to hold Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt, and yes, there was a major Supreme Court ruling today. But that shouldnt render everything else irrelevant, he said, particularly the panels hearing on on banks standard practice of holding a fraction of their deposits in cash. I would like to suggest that the hearing were holding today is not to be dismissed as insignificant, he said. Were dealing with a subject thats rarely thought about, but has a major impact on our economy. Pace University economics professor Joseph Salernoargued thatthe practice known as fractional-reserve banking is inherently inflationary because banks expand the money supply when they lend out their clients deposits. No Democratic lawmakers attended the hearing. Mr. Paul last month ended his campaign for the Republican presidential nomination, but has said he will continue his push to win delegates to the Republican National Convention in August.

Libertarians Unite: Gary Johnson Courting Ron Paul Supporters

Republican presidential candidate former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson makes a statement during a debate Thursday, Sept. 22, 2011, in Orlando, Fla.

Libertarian presidential nominee Gary Johnson is courting supporters of Republican candidate Ron Paul, hoping that a transfer of allegiance will infuse his campaign with new momentum.

Is Gary Johnson Another Ron Paul?

Johnson, the former governor of New Mexico, has yet to generate anything close to the passionate level of support enjoyed by Paul, a GOP congressman from Texas who advocates libertarian positions on many issues. Both Johnson and Paul call for severe cutbacks in federal spending and power, and both are very critical of U.S. military interventions abroad.

Paul has admitted that he stands virtually no chance of overtaking Mitt Romney and winning the Republican presidential nomination. But Paul has not endorsed Romney and is hoping that his delegates at the Republican National Convention in August, estimated to number in the hundreds, will be able to push his ideas into the GOP platform.

Johnson’s goals are different. He wants to make a strong showing in the November election, and is trying to gain support from Paul backers to push up his standing in the opinion polls and perhaps qualify for the presidential debates this fall.

Johnson has been giving media interviews to gain attention for his ideas, and has recently talked to news outlets in Florida and California, states with large Hispanic populations. Johnson believes that Latinos will be receptive to his candidacy because of his record governing New Mexico, which has one of the most significant Latino populations in the country.

Johnson has been increasing his travel schedule and plans to visit the key swing state of Ohio this weekend. He has also released a new video in which he urges Democrats and Republicans to back his candidacy. He says, “Take as many votes as possible away from the people in both parties keeping us in a state of perpetual war, increasing unsustainable debt, record joblessness, and a bipartisan economic death wish ruining America for 330 million of us.”

In fact, he sounds a lot like Ron Paul, which could help him bring Paul supporters into his campaign.

Paul in the Hall

By John Bicknell Posted at 12:01 a.m. today

Texas Rep. Ron Paul wont be the Republican nominee for president in 2012, but he is getting a pretty cool consolation prize.

On Thursday, Paul will be inducted into the CQ Roll Call Congressional Baseball Hall of Fame.

Paul was a solid performer for seven years on the Republican team, but he is being honored largely for a single moment the night in 1979 when he smacked a pitch from former Ohio Democratic Rep. Ron Mottl over the left-field wall at Four Mile Run Park in Alexandria, Va., a Fenwayesque shot of about 310 feet. It is believed to be the first out-of-the-park homer in the history of the Congressional game. (The only other, by Illinois GOP Rep. John Shimkus, hit the foul pole in 1997 at Prince Georges Stadium in Bowie, Md. Others have hit inside-the-park homers.)

Paul will become the 22nd member of the Hall of Fame in a ceremony before the start of the 51st Annual CQ Roll Call Congressional Baseball Game on Thursday night at Nationals Park.

I think they honored me that night with an award for doing it, Paul told Roll Call in an interview for a story that will appear in Thursdays game program. It was a lot of fun, thats all. There was no long-lasting significance.

Now there is.

Like most high-achievers, Paul would rather talk about the one that got away.

I remember the one I missed, Paul said. I hit the top of the wall and got a double. And that was at old Memorial Stadium in Baltimore, the former home of the Orioles.

He ended his career with a .294 batting average, six runs scored and six RBIs during seven games.
